Dear xx,
Currently a student of chemistry at the Beijing Normal University, I amscheduled to graduate in June 1998 with a B. S. degree. The university hasoffered, on the basis of my outstanding academic record, to exempt me from theusually mandatory examinations for graduate studies, should I decide to join itsM. S. program. After weighing all the pros and cons, I now prefer to pursue mygraduate studies with your university, as I think it will put me on betterfooting for my career.
My interest in science in general and chemistry in particular was firstfostered by my family, which has, for several generations, been made up ofprofessionals. My grandfather graduated from the University of Minnesota with aDoctoral degree in engineering, a highly unusual accomplishment for a citizen ofmainland China in those years. My father, a professor of mathematics, was mymain source of inspiration during the three years when I studied with theBeijing Mathematics Olympic School. My mother, a senior engineer of chemicalengineering, was the motivation behind me as I participated in a variety ofscientific activities such as the Solar Energy Club. Such a family environmenthas bestowed on me a gift for natural science that I have never failed to takeadvantage of. It has been my dream to become an outstanding expert in the fieldof chemistry.
Since I entered into the university over three years ago, I have studieddiligently and conscientiously. With that, I have acquired a solid background inchemistry, mathematics and physics. With an overall GPA of 92. 29/100, I have, for three years running, kept myself as the very top student among the 114undergraduates of my grade. I have not confined myself to my coursework, however. I have frequented the library and probably read more chemistryliterature than most of other students. By satisfying my thirst for moreknowledge, I have kept myself abreast of the new developments in chemistryaround the world. I have also excelled in mastering foreign languages. AlthoughI have never majored in the study of any particular language, my Englishproficiency has been improved to a point where it is comparable to that of mostEnglish majors in Chinese universities, and for that, I have been exempted fromhaving to take an English course in the upper years. In recognition of myconsistent excellence, I have been awarded the First-Class Excellent AcademicScholarship for three year.
Education at the Beijing Normal University emphasizes the importance ofhands-on experience. In the summer of 1995, I joined Professor Tians team towork o the synthesis of inorganic materials. In 1996, professor Guo made me amember of his research team, which gave me good exposure to unsymmetricalsynthesis. I am now carrying out (sophisticated) experiment under the directionof Dr. Wang. Through these arrangements, I have gained good experiences inlaboratory research and greatly improved my skills for scientificexperimentation. Starting from the beginning of next semester, I will be writingmy graduation paper under the seasoned guidance of professor (zhong kexue), aresearch fellow from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
As the Beijing Normal University specializes in training teachers, I havealso taken quite a number of general education courses, such as phycology, pedagogy and teaching methods. And earlier this year, I was awarded theExcellent Teaching Assistantship for my outstanding performance during theinternship at a high school.
I did not allow my heavy load of study to deter me from taking part inextracurricular activities. As the chair of the charity survives committee oncampus, I honed my organizing skills and augmented my work efficiency. Convincedthat the meaning of life comes from helping others, I have always been mostobliging whenever anyone comes to me for help, which has won me lots of friends.Such personality, combined with my intellectual vigor and determination, shouldstand me ready for any challenges.
I am applying for acceptance into your program because I know that yourcountry has leading the way in the development of chemistry, and I would like toput myself on the cutting edge of the field. I believe that your graduate schoolcan offer the kind of academic quality and environment that I need. I amparticularly interested in analytical and physical chemistry, as I have beenfascinate by both its theoretical foundations and its practical promise. I amalso interested in polymer chemistry and environmental chemistry. The completionof graduate studies with your program will not only enable me to realize my mostcherished childhood dream but also put me in a much better position to serve mycountry.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could give favorable consideration tomy application for acceptance and financial aid.
Yours sincerely,

Dear x,
“The world of computers is growing at an un-recordable rate everyday, computers are the most influential tools in our lives, they are our present andfuture. In my opinion nothing on the planet can measure the exponential growthand excitement in the computing industry, and industry which I want to be a partof, particularly Software Engineering. As long as computers are around, SoftwareEngineering will take place after all, people need to write and code theprograms like Microsoft Word, and code your games, they don’t just appear. Mygoal is to be part of a team who creates worthwhile, efficient and usefulsoftware for consumers. And the Engineering course if I work at it, which Iwill, will be the key to my success, my current computing A-Level course is agood first step for my goal.
Other courses I am currently studying are Mathematics and Accountancy,Maths is also very important to my selected career, Maths is a universallanguage, it is used by everything, and is very involved with Computers.
I enjoy number work, so an obvious choice at A-Level was Accountancyalthough I find this subject less challenging than others, its still interestingand fun, but it doesn’t grip me like Computing and is not an immediate careerchoice I am hard working and currently work at my local ASDA store, I am on theProvisions/Chilled section and am part of a big team, we each depend on eachother to meet deadlines, its quite a demanding job as you have to deal and betrained with customer services and complaints as we work on the shop floorduring open hours. I currently work a 16hour weekend for ASDA, which providesthe money I need for hobbies.
My hobbies include football, going out to the cinema and the odd club orpub, shopping for myself and others, my PC, and the most expensive of all, mygirlfriend. I also like to swim, I find it quite relaxing and it is goodexercise. I also love to eat out, going out for meals with friends is unrivalledby almost any social gathering including clubs and pubs, I love sitting around atable talking and joking about with friends while drinking and eating, itssomething I try and do at least once a month. Friends are very important to meand I try to be the best friend I can.”
Yours sincerely,

Dear x,
I am applying to The City University of New York as a Visiting GraduateStudent for one term of study in the fall of 2009, non-degree. I completed my BAin English and Danish from x x x in Denmark in June, 2008 and for the time beingI am studying for my masters degree.
My love for language determined my field of study. Originally, I wanted tostudy French, but a half year stay in England completely changed my mind.
In the summer of 2004 I applied at the National Center for Young Peoplewith Epilepsy (NCYPE) in Surrey, England as a student support worker. I workedin a residential house taking care of eight boys with severe disabilities, and Iloved being able to manage this responsibility and being challenged everyday.
Life in England was not entirely different to my life in Denmark, but moreso than I thought. And what I loved the most was learning the language properly. To feel how my vocabulary was extended every day and to explore new dialects ofEnglish I did not know existed.
During my education at the English department of x x x I have found aninterest in the American side to the English language. Earlier in my studies Itook a course with the subject of Autobiography about writers in exile inAmerica, such as Jack Kerouac and Andrei Codrescu. This semester I took a coursein American Studies which provided a historical perspective to the Americanliterary history and this course opened the door to American literature for me.I was deeply moved by the incredible Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglassand T. S. Elliots The Waste Land inspired me to explore an unknown world ofpoetry. In my Bachelor Project I wrote about the US Governor Mike Huckabee andhis use of rhetorics in the US Primary Elections of 2007, where I explored thedepths and intentions of his use of language.
Besides studying I am a volunteer translator for a trans-European politicalorganisation, Neweuropeans, founded by Franck Biancheri, who is also the manbehind the student network Erasmus, and my work consists of helping themtranslate their English website into Danish. I am very fond of linguistics, andI have a special interest in the subject of Communicative Translation. I enjoyworking with a text and making the native English intention become clear in myown language, and since every single word has its own ambiguous connotation, tome it is as fun as a good Sunday crossword puzzle to find the right word thatsuites the context.
My university has a tradition of incorporating group work into every areaof student studies and each semester students form groups of 3-8 students andwrite a project on the basis of a lecture or a subject that is rooted in thestudents field of study.
The experience of working in groups has taught me the skill of working inclose connection with my fellow students; to be flexible and to takeresponsibility for not only my own work, but also the work of my group members.I find that my role in this constellation has often been to take the initiativeto get started and get things done on time and to keep the breadth of view. As aperson I am very sociable and therefore I have found that working in groups isthe perfect way to combine my independent studying with exciting groupdiscussions and a common interest in our specific course of study.
In the whole I feel that my bachelor degree has given me a solidunderstanding of the theoretical part of the English language area. Equally, mystudies have included practical work, so Im prepared for future work in myfield of study. In that respect, I have structured my education so that I alsoattain a teacher competence in Danish and English along with my Mastersdegree.
But my studies at have been hard at times. In the end of 2002 I wasdiagnosed with Crohns disease (inflammatory bowel disease). Today I am happy tosay that I am much better and my illness is under control. Though it was a toughtime, it taught me that I have the strength to pull through in a crisis. Andmost importantly, I have proven to myself that I am a fighter.
My motivation for wanting to study in America is that I through my studieshave gotten an exciting insight into American literature and culture and I amfascinated with American history, which encompasses a proud tradition ofliberty.
I feel that I can contribute to The City University of New York with anambitious and hardworking spirit, and believe the adventure of studying abroadand experiencing my field of study up close will provide me with a purposeful, different and international angle to my English studies and will be rewarding inregards to my further studies and work in Denmark.
Yours sincerely,
