我國歷史上最早出現(xiàn)的教師節(jié)是1931年。當(dāng)時(shí)，教育界知名教授邰爽秋、程其保等聯(lián)絡(luò)京、滬教育界人士，擬定每年6月6日為教師節(jié)，并發(fā)表《教師節(jié)宣言》，提出改善教師待遇、保障教師工作、增進(jìn)教師修養(yǎng)3項(xiàng)目標(biāo)。這個(gè)教師節(jié)沒有被當(dāng)時(shí)的國民黨政府承認(rèn)，但在全國各地產(chǎn)生了一定影響。
鑒于“六·六”教師節(jié)是教師自發(fā)組織設(shè)立的，國民黨政府沒有承認(rèn)，1939年，國民黨政府教育部決定另立孔子誕辰日(8月27日)為教師節(jié)，并頒發(fā)了《教師節(jié)紀(jì)念暫行辦法》，但當(dāng)時(shí)未能在全國推行。
1951年，中華人民共和國教育部和中華全國總工會(huì)共同商定，將教師節(jié)與“五一”國際勞動(dòng)節(jié)合并一起作為我國教師節(jié)。由于種種原因，教師節(jié)實(shí)際上并未實(shí)行。
為了發(fā)揚(yáng)“尊師重教”的優(yōu)良傳統(tǒng)，提高教師地位，1985年1月21日，在第六屆全國人大常委會(huì)第九次會(huì)議上正式通過國務(wù)院關(guān)于建立老師節(jié)的議案，確定每年9月10日為中國的教師節(jié)。從此以后，老師便有了自己的節(jié)日。
